چکیده

Morphodynamics means 'the dynamics of form', and the purpose of morphody-namic theories is to describe and explain the birth, evolution, and death of form. The term 'form' is used differently in different sciences, but the notions of discontinuity and organisation seems to recur in most uses. A central question is: how can continuous changes of an amorphous substance, such as increasing the velocity of a water flow, impose discontinuous and organised boundaries onto the spatio-temporal dimensions of the substance? Physics, for example, is interested in describing patterns emerging in turbulent water (e.g. Taylor cells), whereas biology is concerned with the organic forms that are created during ontogenesis (creation of individual organisms) and phylogenesis (creation of species). In economics, business cycles has been treated from this point of view, and semiotics and linguistics study the genesis of the conceptual distinctions inherent in our language. These sciences have of course always described the finished forms, e.g. the morphology of an animal or the semantic fields of a language, but the new research agenda requires the sciences to also account for the process whereby the forms emerge. If, in addition, we do not assume a divine interference in nature, then we can further specify the morphogenetic problem as a problem of self-organisation: how was it possible for matter to arrange itself into molecules, for molecules to aggregate into cells, for cells to form biological systems, for biological systems to create social systems? New advances in mathematics have made this ambition look less hopeless than before. Fractal geometry has demonstrated how extremely simple rules can generate very complex shapes, such as the Mandelbrot set (Fig. 1.1). Similarly, chaos theory has demonstrated how simple processes, which under certain conditions are completely regular, can acquire a complex and unpredictable behaviour under

Evolution of Marine Morphodynamic Modelling: Time for 3-D?

The question whether it is time for marine morphodynamic models to take into account the 3-D nature of water and sediment motion is discussed starting from practical demand and the state-of-the-art in basic knowledge and model development. This leads to the observation that there is a clear practical demand, and that suitable software environments and some 3-D model components exist, but that t...

A coastal morphodynamic model for cross-shore sediment transport

A numerical model to represent the mechanisms of cross-shore sediment transport induced by wave and storm events has been established. The model consists of three sub-models (wave transformation, morphodynamic movement, and sedimentation) capable of representing the transport and redistribution of four grain sizes over a coastal area. It is designed to simulate the morphological evolution cause...

Sensitivity analysis of a morphodynamic modeling system applied to a Portuguese tidal inlet

Coastal area morphodynamic models are prone to severe errors arising from various sources, including: (1) the use of empirical sediment transport formulae (Pinto et al., 2006); (2) the reliability of the data used to feed the models; (3) the use of simplifying physical assumptions; (4) the error propagation between the various modules. Since these errors can be significant, the usefulness and c...

An integrated coastal modeling system for analyzing beach processes and beach restoration projects, SMC

A user-friendly system called coastal modeling system (SMC) has been developed by the Spanish Ministry of Environment and the University of Cantabria. The system includes several numerical models specifically developed for the application of the methodology proposed in the Spanish Beach Nourishment and Protection Manual. According to this methodology, the SMC is structured into five-modules: (1...

Mechanisms of pattern formation in development and evolution.

We present a classification of developmental mechanisms that have been shown experimentally to generate pattern and form in metazoan organisms. We propose that all such mechanisms can be organized into three basic categories and that two of these may act as composite mechanisms in two different ways. The simple categories are cell autonomous mechanisms in which cells enter into specific arrange...
